LAOS, THE LAST LEG (27/02/09)

Lazy days on the Mekong

Wat Phu - Champasak

It is now “unseasonably hot” . . . 38/39 degrees, life is languid here, buses go slow, picking up people and livestock, and will stop every 20 yards to pick up people – there’s no waiting at bus stops here. We have visited Wat Phu in Champasac an old Khmer temple, which is aging badly, but whets the appetite for our Angkor Wat visit in a fortnight.

We took a wonderful 7 hour boat south down the Mekhong, from Champasac to the Four Thousand Islands, and the pace is slowing down yet again. People are gentle and charming pretty much without exception. The waterfalls in the area near the Cambodian border are impressive and the waterbuffalo are the most contented animals in the world! Tomorrow Cambodia.
